Book Nooks

Logo Design, UI Design, Type Design, Audio Design, Asset Design

«Book Nooks» is a two-player 3D-puzzle plattformer that was created within 2.5 months at Cologne Game Lab in UE4. Each player controls a character with a unique skill set.

For the game I developed a custom font that reflects the character’s abilities. For Nonnee I created a squarish uppercase set that emphasizes the characters ability to conjure cardboard objects. Addie on the other hand is able to change an objects attributes, therefore I combined geometric sans and serif lowercase letters to show Addies ability to reimagine and combine.

The interface reflects the abilities of the characters as well. For one each characters ‹inventor› is color-coded in the same color as the corresponding avatar. As their abilities are word-based I incorporated book aesthetics into the interface as well. The words in the inventory are styled like books that you can pull out from a shelf. In order to increase readability agains the background a cloud of words in the style of David Carson was added.

The logo I created for the game includes the custom font and invokes the image of the titular book nook—decorative miniature worlds inserted into a bookshelf.

For the game I provided additional book designs that can be found all over the level. Some are completely made up, others are modeled after existing books I worked on.
